NM2007 - Trail and Weather Conditions

Update: January 15, 2007 -- The word is snow...lots and lots and lots of wonderful white, fluffy snow. The Oregon Cascades enjoyed a wonderful start to the 06/07 season with over 10 feet of white stuff on the Nordic Center trails as of mid-January. Excellent skiing started this year by mid-November, thus far giving Mt Bachelor arguably one of the best snow seasons in the northern hemisphere the past three months!

Weather/Snow Condition General Note for all participants: When you view weather forecasts for Central Oregon and the Central Cascades remember that there is a massive difference in weather between the Mt Bachelor area (6300 feet...crest of the mountains) and Bend (3500 feet...18 miles east into the high desert). For example, if you see a forecast of 40-50F high temps in Bend, it is entirely possible that the mountain will be getting fresh, cold powder that very same day. Folks in lowland areas also need to realize that Mt Bachelor typically has a late March snowpack of at least 6-8 feet of solid (high moisture content) snow base so even prolonged periods of warm temps, rain, or simply no fresh snowfall just doesn't have the same impact here as it does in other places. Bottomline: Mt Bachelor is as consistent (or more so) a good-to-great snow location this time of year as anyplace in the world.
