Europe
XC in Europe is incredibly mainstream by North American standards from the availability of free, fantastically-groomed trails to the public perception and reception to the sport. One should first look towards Scandinavia, the Alps, and Russia to have awesome XC skiing opportunities.
Less known are the opportunities in other parts of Central Europe, Eastern Europe and even further afield. These semi-hidden gems would include Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Scotland, Turkey, Poland, and Iceland.
In addition, Europe has incredible, but little-known, year-round groomed skiing in the form of several glaciers spotted throughout Central Europe. The snow fields of Norway typically hold snow well into August and when they run low, a murder's row of tram-accessed glaciers in the Alps provide tracks every month of the year. These year round spots are often made particularly exciting by the annual presence of the world's best national teams. You can be enjoying a scenic kick and glide session in mid September alongside the entire Norwegian or Italian National Team. Comparable to a friendly game of soccer with the Brazilian World Cup Team.
